A check-in on the weekly Canadian sales battle between vinyl and CDs

Executive summary: Vinyl sales continue to go up while CD sales are still dropping. CDs will outsell vinyl in terms of units this year (at least in terms of fresh vinyl) but revenues from records will be greater.

The numbers via Luminate:

  • Total CDs sold in Canada last week: 28,775 (down 8.0% from the week before)
  • Total new vinyl sold in Canada last week: 31,845 (up 1.1%. This is the first week in a while where vinyl has outsold CDs.)
  • CDs sold in all of Canada so far this year: 1,323,818 (down 11.8% from a year ago)
  • Vinyl sold in the country so far this year: 1,178,488 (ahead of 2023 by 30.3%)

And since we’re here, let’s talk about streaming:

  • On-demand audio streams in Canada last week: 2,726,276,434
  • For the whole year: 114,482,764,625
