A New Hockey Song: Let’s Get Reggie Leach into the Hockey Hall of Fame

Growing up in small-town Manitoba, I spent a lot of Saturdays and Sundays playing hockey in Riverton on the western shores of Lake Winnipeg.  Going to that arena was always a thrill because everyone on my minor hockey team knew that’s where the Philadelphia Flyers’ Reggie Leach used to play.

Leach–“The Riverton Rifle”–was part of that fearsome Flyers squad of the middle 70s led by Bobby Clarke. His best year was 1975-76 when he won the scoring title with 61 goals in 80 games. He also scored an astounding 19 goals in 16 playoff games (The Flyers lots to the Canadiens, but Reggie was awarded the Conn Smythe trophy, only the second guy on the losing side to win the playoff MVP award.)

Reggie finished his NHL career with 381 regular season goals and 666 points.  And when it came to the playoffs, his stats were 47 goals in 94 games.

So why isn’t he in the Hockey Hall of Fame?  That’s what the Weakerthans John K. Samson want to know. It’s why he has launched a petition to get Reggie his due–and why he’s written a song about the cause.
