Tragically Hip fans are the best.

If you’re in Western Canada, you may have encountered an annual event called GEDfest. Named after Gordon Edgar Downie, organizers work to raise money to support Western Canadian cancer foundation.

Since its founding in Calgary in 2018, “GEDfest honours the life and legacy of Gordon Edgar Gownie and the music of The Tragically Hip through music, community, and philanthropy. Each city’s event raises funds for local cancer foundations, uniting volunteers, music lovers, and supporters — affectionately known as GEDheads — in support of cancer research and care across Canada.

This year, events were held in Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, Regina, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg. A lot of money was raised.

Calgary
• $134,024 — Alberta Cancer Foundation
• $44,674 — Prostate Cancer Centre

Edmonton
• $17,250 — Ben Stelter Foundation

Kelowna
• $28,761 — Kelowna General Hospital Foundation

Regina
• $15,744 — Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan

Saskatoon
• $2,828 — Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan

Winnipeg

Every dollar raised supports cancer research, treatment, and patient and family care in the regions where GEDfest events are held. GEDfest’s grand total is now up to $734,763.

The next event is set for October 17, 2026. There are plans to extend the event into Ontario. Let’s make it happen.
