Amazon has figured out why your Alexa smart speaker is laughing at you

Reports from around the world say that Alexa-powered smart speakers are spontaneously letting out evil laughs. No reason, either. The device would just start laughing maniacally. Why?

The New York Times reports the following from Amazon:

In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase ‘Alexa, laugh,’” when other words are spoken, Amazon said in an emailed statement. “We are changing that phrase to be ‘Alexa, can you laugh?’ which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance ‘Alexa, laugh.’

Ah. Good to know it’s not Skynet giggling at us silly meatbags. Meanwhile, though, some people think our devices should be laughing more.
