And the most-covered song of all time is…NOT “Yesterday” by The Beatles

Yeah, I’m surprised, too.

For years, we’ve all heard that “Yesterday” has more cover versions than any other song having been recorded more than 2500 times, earning Paul McCartney some serious, serious money. But according to this report in the Washington Post, there’s one song that has been covered even more.

Wanna guess? It’s “Silent Night.”

Originally written as “Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht” by Austrian composer Franz Xaver Gruber and lyricist by Father Joseph Mohr in 1818, it has been recorded over 3700 times since it was first performed on Christmas Eve of that year in the town of Oberndorf. Mohr had written it as a poem in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars. Gruber set it to music.

Here’s a timeline courtesy of the Post. Now have you something for your next bar bet.

And we’re not done. Here’s part two of that timeline.
