Apple Music and Universal Music Group unveil Sound Therapy

Used in the right way, music is medicine. Music therapy is a highly effective way of treating many different maladies. And in many cases, no prescription is required.

Apple Music has teamed up with Univeral Music Group for a new collection of specially composed music for a variety of uses: Maintaining focus while working or studying, relaxation, and sleep. All the tracks on these playlists were created by teams of scientists, composers, producers, and engineers at a company called Sollos. I quote:

“Sound Therapy blends songs subscribers already know and love with special sound waves designed to enhance users’ daily routines, while retaining the artist’s original vision. Backed by scientific research and powered by UMG’s proprietary audio technologies, Sound Therapy harnesses the power of sound waves, psychoacoustics, and cognitive science to help listeners relax or focus the mind.”

Let’s try a few, shall we?

The Focus playlists taps into “the power of gamma auditory beats to help listeners get in the mindset to achieve optimum focus. White noise masks distracting sounds, aiming to help listeners stay in the moment.”

Need to relax? You need an infusion of “theta auditory beats to help achieve ultimate relaxation.”

The Sleep playlist uses “an infusion of delta auditory beats or pink noise, which works similarly to white noise but uses natural sounds like rainfall and ocean waves.”

Let’s see how this works.
