Lists

Before you click on the new Rolling Stone list of the 250 best songs of the millennium so far, read this.

Rolling Stone has released another one of its “greatest” lists, this time focusing on the best songs released so far in the 21st century. This is, of course, clickbait designed to get people (a) mentioning Rolling Stone, and (b) fighting amongst themselves.

There’s also a lot of conceit in this list, given that about 100,000 new songs are uploaded to streaming music services every day. There’s no way any committee of humans can handle that flow of information. But whatever.

Before I give you the link, here’s what you’ll see:

  • If you recognize all the names and songs on this list, you’re a musical genius. Full stop.
  • There are far more singers than bands included. That gives us some idea of how the business is working these days.
  • It’s a very international list with plenty of representation from Latin and K-pop artists.
  • That being said, this is a list compiled from an American perspective.
  • Note all the indie artists.
  • Canadians include Avril Lavigne, Arcade Fire, Grimes, Drake, The Weeknd, and Arcade Fire.
  • Before you ask, there are four Taylor Swift songs and maybe not the ones you’d expect.
  • And if you ask me about the choice for number one, I don’t have a valid argument against it. I think it’s a pretty decent choice.

Ready? Go here. FIGHT!
