Bono Does A Number – And Not Musically! Doctors Detail His Horrific Bike Crash Injuries

The bicycle accident that sent Bono into major surgery in New York this week was as stunning as it was gruesome (thanks to atu2.com for the link) as detailed by Rolling Stone:

  • Left facial fracture involving the orbit of his eye.
Left scapula (shoulder blade) fracture in three separate pieces.
Left compound distal humerus fracture where the bone of his humerus was driven though his skin and the bone was in six different pieces. He was taken emergently to the operating room for a five-hour surgery Sunday evening where the elbow was washed out and debrided, a nerve trapped in the break was moved and the bone was repaired with three metal plates and 18 screws.
One day later, he had surgery to his left hand to repair a fracture of his 5th metacarpal.

Per the doctor’s report, Bono will require extensive therapy. He is expected to make a full recovery.

How this impacts a possible tour remains to be seen. There was speculation the tour announcement would come during their now cancelled visit to Jimmy Fallon this week. Bono seems to hurting himself on a regular basis these days: Falling off stages, hurting his back (requiring surgery) and now a pretty nasty accident. At some point the band will have to question their life span. Will this generate more career ending discussions?
