The Secret History of Rock

Book on Mint Records

Over the years, Canadians have been awful at documenting the history of the domestic rock’n’roll. Happily, though, that started a change several years ago and we’re now building up a very good library of books that tell the musical stories of various Canadians.

And a few of these books are pretty specialized.  Take, for example,
Fresh at Twenty:  The Oral History of Mint Records by Kaitlin Fontana.  This is the story of a Vancouver-based record label that, inspired by Sub Pop Records in the US, devoted itself to capturing a certain portion of the Canadian west coast sound.

Dozens of people across the country were interviewed for the book and it makes for some very interesting reading, especially if you’re into the Canadian indie music scene.

Fresh at Twenty:  The Oral History of Mint Records by Kaitin Fontana is out now through ECW Books.
