Bowie’s Music to be Turned into Musical

Do we blame Andrew Lloyd Webber?  Or Pete Townshend?  Actually, I can accept productions like Jesus Christ Superstar or Tommy because they were written for the stage in mind.  Both have a coherent libretto and songs that support the story in a sequential manner.

I can even understand something like American Idiot.  Turning a concept album into a stage production isn’t that difficult.

Where I get lost is when someone tries to twist songs into a narrative.

To wit:

  1. Mamma Mia (ABBA)
  2. Movin’ Out (Billy Joel)
  3. We Will Rock You (Queen)
  4. Rock of Ages (A bunch of 80s hair bands)
  5. The Jersey Boys (Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.  I’ll give this one a thumbs-up, actually.  It’s more of a biography thing, anyway–and it’s pretty good.)

Now somone wants to take Bowie’s Heroes album and turn it into…something futuristic.  Given that so many classic rock artists have had their music repurposed already, I’m surprised no one has mined the Bowie catalogue yet.
