Bringing Songs to the Deaf Via Sign Language in a Whole New Way

Back in the days of the CFNY Video Roadshow, we were booked at a school for the deaf in Milton, Ontario. That turned out to be one of the most interesting gigs we ever did.

The kids loved watching the videos on the big screen, but they also loved congregating around the big bass bins so they could feel the vibrations and beats of the music.  And when I went up on stage to talk to the crowd, I was accompanied by a woman who signed what I said.

That went very smoothly until I introduced a song by Echo and the Bunnymen.  She just turned to me and said “Really?”

This came back to me because of this story abotu Holly Maniatty, a women who is using sign language to bring music to the deaf in a new way.  Read the story at CTV.
