Buy Ian Curtis’ Kitchen Table. You Know, the Kitchen Where He Hanged Himself

Two things happened on Sunday, May 18, 1980.  Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington state, the first major volcano incident in the lower 48 states since 1915.  We’re also talking about something that happened earlier that day, some 4,600 miles away in a non-descript house in Manchester.  Joy Division Ian Curtis hanged himself.

Ian was suffered from depression, weird drug interactions, epilepsy, money issues and a rocky relationship with his wife (with whom he had just had a young daughter) and his Belgian mistress.  Unable to cope anymore, he spent the night watching TV and drinking.  And then with Iggy Pop’s The Idiot on the turntable, he ended his own life using a clothesline in the kitchen.

There was a table in that kitchen, of course.  It’s where Ian would have sat while contemplating what he was about to do.  That table is now for sale on eBay.

Thanks, Internet! (And thanks to everyone who sent in this link.)
