Calgary gets a classic alternative radio station. Introducing 107.3 The Edge: Iconic Alternative

At least I’m pretty sure it’s the country’s first. And there aren’t a lot of stations like this anywhere in North America. [UPDATE: It’s not, but it’s one of the very, very few operating today. I stand corrected.]

The 107.3 MHz frequency in Calgary has been several things over the years including classic rock and an experiment with simulcasting talk on FM. Today (July 31), it’s something brand new: 107.3 The Edge subtitled Iconic Alternative.

After months of work in secret, the station launched today with a deep playlist featuring all the cool alternative stuff late Boomers and Gen Xers grew up with. There’s also plenty for Millennials to enjoy, too, as this Edge dives into alt-rock material–i.e. punk, New Wave, alt-dance, grunge, indie, etc.–from the 1970s through to the 2000s. Basically, the best alternative music of all time.

Like what? Tears For Fears, Green Day, B-52s, New Order, The Cure, The Cars, INXS, The Spoons, Our Lady Peace, Florence and the Machine, Talking Heads, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Talking Heads, David Bowie, The Killers, Blondie, Nirvana, Tea Party, Matt Good.

Basically, if you came of age musically in the 80s and 90s, this is the music of your youth.

And yes, I’m deeply involved in the station. Expect to hear The Ongoing History of New Music on The Edge very soon. (Back on the air in Calgary! Yay!) And 107.3 The Edge will also carry Stampeders games as of Sunday, August 4.

If you’re out of the market and you want to listen in, go here. You can also listen via iHeart Radio, TuneIn, My Tuner FM, Radioplayer Canada, and Amazon Alexa.

  • The same pre-programmed overplayed crap that we’ve been hearing for 30-40 years and the DJs will get be fired in 6 months anyway. Radio is dead and this station will fail like all the rest.

  • Classic Alternative is a term I haven’t completely accepted yet. Then again, the Chrysler Daytona is also a classic by now.

  • In Kitchener we have 98.5, a community radio station that plays this genre weekdays from 6-6 labeling it “Adult Alternative” and with a midday show hosted by a voice Toronto Edge listeners would remember from the early 90s.
