Checking the latest Canadian sales battles between CDs and vinyl

Yes, Canadians are still buying CDs–a lot of them. But each year, they’re buying fewer and fewer. Meanwhile, we’re picking up plenty of vinyl. What Luminate reports each week are the numbers of new vinyl being sold, not all the used records flying out the door of indie record stores and record shops, not to mention the stuff that’s being sold online.

Here are this week’s CD vs Vinyl numbers for Canada.

  • Total CDs sold in Canada in 2024 so far: 1,175,066 (down 13.1% from a year ago)
  • Total vinyl sold in Canada last week: 1,029,685 (up 29.8% from 12 months ago)
  • Total CD sales last week: 28,184 (down 9.8% from the previous week)
  • Total vinyl sales last week: 26,710 (down 9.5% from a week earlier)

Finally, let’s look at streaming:

  • Songs streamed in Canada last week: 2,752,283,379 (up 0.9% from the previous week)
  • Songs streamed in all of Canada in all of 2024 so far: 100,636,632,720 (up 10.6% from a year ago)
