Chvrches Takes on 4Chan
The anonymous pranksters (and that’s putting in very mildly) who inhabit 4Chan have their own code of Internet justice, which is swift, merciless and weird. Take the case of Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches. Let’s start with the video that started everyone. See if you can spot the thing that caused a 4Chan thread to lose its shit. This comes from the band’s new album Every Open Eye, which is coming September 25.
Nothing too unusual, right? But for some reason, a vile 4Chan popped up calling singer Lauren Mayberry a “whore” and a “slut.” Was it because she took centre stage in the video? Is it the wet hair and red lipstick? Would any members of the thread have sex with her? (That was a point of discussion, which is made it more repulsive by the fact that Lauren regularly receives online threats of date rape.)
I don’t get it. What’s wrong with people?
