Coming soon(?): Apple headphones

We’ve heard rumours of Apple working on a new set of over-the-ear headphones–nothing branded Beats, either–for more than a year now. They might finally go on sale next month.

Code-named “Apple Airpods (X Generation)” on various retail listings (there was a leak from Target), it’s thought that this might be the new Apple StudioPods. Digging a bit deeper into these SKU codes, it appears that the new headphones will come in grey, white and gold with an MSRP of US$399.

That’s not cheap, but given the kind of audio technology Apple has learned from its AirPods and HomePods, people are curious. Noise cancellation? Probably a given.

Whatever form the new product takes, it will have to compete with Beats (owned by Apple and sold in Apple stores) and Bose (also sold in Apple stores).

One hiccup is the corona virus. If these new headphones are being manufactured in China (which they probably are), the release date may be up in the air.
