Concerning: One streaming platform says 28% of all new music uploaded is AI generated

Will AI-generated slop take over music? It’s certainly trying.

Deezer, the Paris-based streamer, says that 28% if all new music being uploaded to streaming platforms–all of them–is fully AI-generated. How many songs is that? About 30,000–a day.

This is an alarming increase. Back in January, the number was 10%, and rose to 18% in April.

How do they know? Deezer is one of the few streamers to publicly tout an AI detection tool to root out the slop. This is CEO Alex Lanternier: “We remove fully AI-generated content from algorithmic recommendations and we don’t include it in editorial playlists.”

Are people listening to the stuff that gets through? It appears not. Deezer says that AI songs account for just 0.5% of listening. Of that, 70% are “fraudulent” (i.e. bots or something similar) while the rest is at least semi-legitimate art created by people using AI as a tool and not an end in itself. That means that only 0.35% of listening is to these tracks.

This situation bears close monitoring.
