Dave Grohl has finally opened up about the death of his mother
Dave Grohl, the Foo Fighters, and their entire organization are excellent in keeping things secret and private. When Taylor Hawkins died, there were many tributes paid but precious little specific information on why he died, when his funeral was held, and the location of his final resting place. Total radio blackout. That was in March 2022.
In July 2022, word began to spread that Virginia Grohl, Dave’s ultra-supportive mother, had also died. There was zero mention of that anywhere except in a short social media post by Dave’s daughter, Violet. Dave remained silent on the matter.
But this week, he opened up to the Song Exploder podcast when he discussed this song from the latest Foo Fighters album, But Here We Are. Ginny Grohl was a public school teacher by trade for 35 years.
I quote from the podcast: “I was with her for all of the time leading up to her passing. Everyday during that period, I would write something on the guitar, because I felt that if I didn’t have that release, I would explode. I would spend the day at the hospital and then try to translate it musically — with no clear intention of what I was trying to achieve. I was finding these chords and progressions that mirrored the way that I felt.”
Two demos were completed and then put together. “These two ideas were separate to me until I imagined that if I were put them together, it’s more than a three or four minute song. It’s something much bigger… I could have a piece of music bigger than anything that we’ve ever done that I could dedicate to my mother.
““She was the most important person in my entire life sSo I thought this had to be the most important music I ever made.”
“I was probably my only friend who liked hanging out with their parent… We were best friends. I felt like I had to honor her, pay tribute to her with this piece of music. So that’s when it turned into something other than a song. It’s the most important thing I’ve ever written because I wrote it for such a gigantic reason.”
We still don’t know why Mrs. Grohl died or the exact date, but this marks the first time Dave has acknowledged her passing. Hear the entire podcast here.
Alan, if she was in the hospital for a significant amount of time it was likely cancer or something completely mundane, why should it be any of our business? Same with Taylor, honestly.
