Deftones’ Chi Cheng Looking Better

On the night Barack Obama was elected president, Deftones’ bass player Chi Cheng took a ride in a car. He didn’t put on his seatbelt.

The accident threw him out of the car and into a coma which has lasted for years.  Doctors had to dig into his skull to remove damage just so he would survive.  Last year, he was moved to an experimental hospital in New Jersey for round-the-clock care.  So far, the medical bills have topped half a million.

Last year, there was some progress.  He made some sounds from his throat, like he was trying to talk. Now when doctors ask him to raise his legs from the bed, he can.  It’s not much, but it’s way, way better than anyone could have ever hoped for.

His brother, Ming, and his family have released this video to show fans, friends and that anyone who has supported the One Love for Chi campaign that things are slowly looking up.

  • Oh man..thanks for sharing this. It's unfathomable what he's gone through all this time inside his head. Amazing though that he's responding even to such a degree as lifting his leg. Hope he continues to get better. Love the Deftones!
