Don’t Have Tragically Hip Tickets? Then This Might be the Next Best Thing

Demand far outstripped supply for (probably the last) Tragically Hip tour. If you managed to get tickets, consider yourself Lotto 6-49-level lucky. But what if you were shut out? Is there some other way you can show support for the band? Why, yes there is. Here’s an email I received from Rob Ferreira, head of the Toronto Hip Fundraiser.

Hi Alan,

It is only June, but as you know 2016 has already seen the music world lose some of its giants: Glenn Frey, Prince and David Bowie. On May 24th, a generation of Canadians learned that The Tragically Hip frontman, Gord Downie, had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. That it was inoperable, and that it would come back to claim him. When the band broke the news to the nation, they did so like the working class heroes they are, tempering the shock with hope: there would be a Canadian tour and a chance, perhaps a last chance, for fans to feel the magic of his lyrics, and his bandmates instruments, together.

Words of sorrow and support – from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, fellow artists, and the band’s legion of fans followed suit. And in cities across Canada, devout Tragically Hip fans, like me, joined forces to organize concert-day celebrations. We want to rally behind the band on this most difficult road trip, and show our appreciation for Gord’s courage in the face of adversity.

We will be celebrating The Tragically Hip’s return to Air Canada Centre on August 10th, 12th and 14th by holding pre-party fundraiser events on those same dates at the Firkin on Harbour located at 10 Yonge St. in Toronto from 2:00PM to 6:00P. Proceeds from a silent auction and raffle are going to the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research in support of Sunnybrook Foundation.

I would like to ask for your support for these events in a form of publicity and awareness – leveraging your brand, blog, podcast and affiliation with The Edge. The more attention we can generate, the greater our contribution to a cause that means so much to Gord and other Canadians dealing with brain cancer.

Look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sounds good to me. Here are more details.

These events were just launched this morning on the Tragically Hip Fan Forum with 3500+ members so I expect RSVP’s to increase in the coming days and weeks. Exposing this event to the Hip fan community and the general public outside of this group will only help our cause.
