Earth’s radio waves have been turned into music

Our planet is alive in so many ways, including being a giant generator of electromagnetic waves. Polar winds, lightning, the Van Allen belt, auroras, and more phenomena contribute to this.

At the bottom of the world at the Halley Research Station in Antarctica, there’s an antenna that captures all the low-frequency waves that ricochet about the planet. Nigel Meredith, a scientist who analyzes this data, thinks it all sounds pretty musical.

This has led to the Sounds of Space Project, which is a collaboration between composer Kim Cunio and multimedia artist Diana Scarborough, They’ve just released an album entitled Infinitas Formas. It takes these sounds and puts them together with a David Attenborough listening expedition that captured the wind, whales, penguins, and seals.

Let’s have a listen.
