Have You Ever Bought Music You Never Intended to Play?
I certainly have–although when I bought it, I was sure I was going to listen to it someday. Yet I have piles of unheard CDs in my office and perhaps thousands of never-heard music file on the server in the basement. What was I thinking?
And let’s not even venture into the realm of collectible and rare CDs and vinyl that I purchases in far-flung stops around the world. Almost none of them have seen a laser or a needle. But I sought them out and now I own them. Shouldn’t that count for something?
If these scenarios sound familiar, we’re not alone. The Guardian takes a look:
[According to new research by ICM, a] study of the buying habits of music fans brought up several surprising findings: more people bought a CD last year (57%) than an MP3 download (39%); a whopping 13% of 25-34 year olds and 10% of 18-24 year olds purchased music on cassette in the last month. But perhaps the most unusual of all was the fact that, of those who do buy music on CD, vinyl or cassette tape, 15% never plan on playing them.
