Fascinating: 7 of YouTube’s top 10 music artists are from India
With over a billion people and its robust Bollywood industry, India is one of the great music markets on the planet–and there’s still plenty of room to grow.
This surprised me. India currently supplies seven of YouTube’s top 10 musical artists when measured by views. And if you look at who’s ranked at number nine, you’ll see the name Lata Mangeshkar, a singer who is 90(!!!) years old. She’s been on the chart for 194 weeks.
Mangeshkar is what’s known as a “playback singer.” Her job is to sing songs for Bollywood actors who can’t sing. The actors then just lip-sync the words when the cameras are rolling.
