First Look:Terrence Malick’s Movie About the SXSW and the Austin Music Scene

A little over five years ago, Ian Astbury told me something remarkable. “I was just in Austin for SXSW and Terrance Malick was there, filming material for what he says is going to be a rock’n’roll movie. I’m even in one of the scenes!”

“Wait,” I said, “Terrance Malick? Doesn’t he, like, release movies once a decade? We just got Tree of Life with Brad Pitt a few months ago. You’re telling me that he’s already working on a new movie?”

“Yep,” replied Astbury, “And it looks like it’ll be out sooner than later.”

Okay, so it turned out to be later–but he is working on it. A still from the film (formerly called Weightless but now apparently called Song to Song-is now online. IMDB describes it as “two intersecting love triangles. Obsession and betrayal set against the music scene in Austin, Texas” and stars Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman and Haley Bennett. There are also appearances from Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr., Florence Welch, Holly Hunter and, possibly, Ian Astbury.

The film is set to open March 17.
