France terror: The disco needle attacks
Someone is going around stabbing people with some kind of needle/syringe in French dance clubs. So far, there have been dozens of victims.
The attacks go something like this. People who are out for a night of dancing–women make up the majority of the victims–are having a good time when they suddenly feel pain, break out into a cold sweat, get nauseous, and dizzy. Later, they find evidence that they’ve been pricked with a needle: a red dot that’s surrounded by a circular blue bruise. In between, some report an attempt at a sexual assault. Others, nothing.
Police have 60 reports of this kind of assault, although the true number is probably much higher.
Needless to say, people are freaked out. Many are now awaiting the result of HIV tests, something that takes up to five weeks. Others are worried about hepatitis. No blood tests have detected any date-rape type drugs (Rohypnol, for example), Ketamine, or GHB (so-called “liquid ecstasy.”)
Most of the attacks have taken place in Nantes, although complaints have come from other cities, including at least one music festival,
Cops have no suspects and no idea what their motives might be. Meanwhile, some clubs have reported a 50% drop in revenue because people are now too afraid to go out dancing.
