Is it me or does it seem all these festivals are having a harder time getting large acts? Ottawa Bluesfest lineup this year is not all that interesting and neither is this. Hell, even Rockfest is a little disappointing. I was hoping Metallica would be added to the Ottawa bill since they are through here at the same time. Nope, skipped us and went right to Montreal and Quebec. I guess Bluesfest couldn’t afford Metallica.
I think the issue isn’t so much the difficulty in booking large acts, it’s that there aren’t that many large acts anymore in the rock genre. Pop, hip-hop and EDM dominate right now, so there aren’t many bands that qualify as “large acts” anymore. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like there’s the “elder statesmen” category, like Metallica, the Peppers, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, etc. who’ve been around at least a couple of decades, and then there’s up and comers, but there’s very little in the middle category that would qualify as major acts for a festival – with Muse being one of them.
So far this year, the only festival that really seems to have crafted a truly amazing lineup is Rock Werchter in Belgium. Solid from openers to headliners.
Kind of meh I think
I’ll be waiting to see if the bands I like are concentrated on one day of the festival which would make it worth making a day trip for. If I can get at least 5 or 6 of these on one day, I might go:
Car Seat Headrest
Dashboard Confessional
Flume
Imagine Dragons
Phantogram
Rag’n’Bone Man
Tegan and Sara
The Naked and Famous
The Shins
The Wayhome fest has never booked one jam-band!!
