Merry Clayton, the woman whose soaring vocals give life to the end of the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” has been seriously injured in a car crash in Los Angeles.

Clayton, who can be seen in the excellent documentary about backup singers called Twenty Feet from Stardom, also worked with Neil Young, Ray Charles, Carole King and Joe Cocker.  She’s even in the background of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama.”
