Going for surgery? Prep with the right music for when it’s all over.
Another study says that the right music may help people not only recover more quickly from surgery but also help reduce pain–or at least the reception of it.
Researchers at California Northstate University College of Medicine looked at 3,736 studies, narrowing things down to 35 papers containing data on patient outcomes, focusing on things like pain and anxiety related to surgical procedures. They also look at things like heart rate and opioid use to reduce pain.
The conclusion? Just listening to music after surgery through speakers or headphones had “noticeable effects” on pain and anxiety levels. These patients also used half the usual dose of morphine to control their pain. Heart rates dropped an average of 4.5 BPM compared to patients who didn’t listen to music in the post-op period. That’s important because this allows for better circulation. Levels of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, also dropped.
There are still some questions to be answered but for anyone heading for surgery anytime soon, listening to music after it’s all over sounds like a good idea. Hey, it can’t hurt, right.
