When David Letterman got rolling, his show was one of the few places outside of Saturday Night Live where you had a chance to see a cool band perform live on TV.

The frustrating thing, though, is that outside of a couple of CDs that were released years ago, it’s very hard to come by some of these performances legally. But that’s why we have the Internet, isn’t it?

Mental Floss has collected together 11 Letterman performances, including this one from October 6, 1983. Yes, kids, Michael Stipe used to have a lot of hair. And Mike Mills was a baby!
