Gord Downie Named Canada’s Newsmaker of the Year

Every year, the Canadian press selects a person as its newsmaker of the year and to the surprise of no one, the 2017 recipient is Gord Downie. And yes, this is the second year in a row for Gord.

He won 53% of the votes cast by newsrooms across the country. Justin Trudeau finished second with 13% while new NDP head Jagmeet Singh had 11%.

A couple of fun facts:

  • Gord is the only entertainer to ever receive the newsmaker of the year title in 71-year history of the poll.
  • Other than Gord, only Lester Pearson, Pierre Trudeau, Terry Fox and Rick Hansen have been named more than once.
