Survey

Hate going to the dentist? This music may help calm you down.

Here’s another survey masquerading as an ad for a company, but such studies can often provide interesting information. In this case, we’re going to look at going to the dentist.

No one likes the dentist, especially if it’s anything more than a routine cleaning. Anxiety can run pretty high, especially around drills, needles, and pokey things. I won’t have as much as a cavity filled unless I get the gas. (I’m an extreme wuss with the pain caused by Novocain injections. It hurts. A lot.)

Here’s what we learn from this survey. It applies to Americans, but I think we can extrapolate things a little bit for Canadians.

  • 70% of the respondents said that music makes going to the dentist more comfortable.
  • 42% say that the best music for reducing dental anxiety is classical music. Pop and soft rock come in second and third.
  • The top calming artists are Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, Taylor Swift, Stevie Wonder, Queen, James Taylor, The Eagles, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, and, er, The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
  • 44% said that they’d prefer a dentist who lets them choose the playlist. (My dentist encourages phones and earbuds.)
  • 38% of metal fans say that going to the dentist REALLY stresses them out. Only 52% go to the dentist, which is the lowest of any genre. (That could explain a few things about fans at gigs.) If they do go, they prefer Metallica, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Slipknot, and Korn.
  • Only 14% of EDM fans and metalheads floss.
