Hate the Idea of Kanye West Closing the Pan Am Games? Sign the Petition.

When it was announced that Kanye West was going to headline at Glastonbury, a petition was quickly organized and collected somewhere around 150,000 signatures demanding that he be dumped and replaced with someone less douchey. Nice try, but Kanye’s performance went ahead, anyway and was ultimately hailed as a creative triumph. As one wag said “Everyone was talking about Kanye, which is exactly what you’re supposed to do about a headliner.”

Now that Kanye has been signed to close the Toronto Pan Am Games, the petition gambit has once again been rolled out. If you’re outraged and angry about this turn of events–and judging from the traffic that my post on the subject generated, there are a lot of you–you can sign a new Change.Org petition demanding that something be done.

As I type this, 9,285 names are already on the list, leaving just 715 to go before it becomes real.  Here’s the text.

The Toronto Pan Am games have proven to be very important for Torontonians this year and have triggered a unified sense of pride in our city. It would only be just to ask a proud Torontonian (or even a Canadian for that matter) in the music industry to perform, such as Drake, Walk Off The Earth, Feist, Metric, Shania Twain, deadmau5, Crystal Castles, Zeds Dead, The Weeknd, Peaches, K’naan, and many many more! The options for Toronto artists are far from limited and choosing someone like Kanye West raises several concerns among the people. Why was a local artist or group not chosen and supported, just as our local athletes are throughout the games?

Toronto Pan Am Games organizing committee please reconsider your decision as we will NOT be attending Kanye West’s show.

You can go ahead and sign, but it won’t do any good other than to give Kanye more press–and the dude seems to thrive on hate.

Mayne that British dude was right. Everyone’s talking about this–and isn’t that what counts?
