Having trouble finding a name for your new band? This site may be able to help.

Finding a name for your band is a torturous process. Consider:

  • It has to be unique and not used by anyone else.
  • It needs to be catchy and memorable.
  • Ideally, it needs to encapsulate something about your image, sound, and attitude.
  • The name music lend itself to good graphic design.
  • Everyone in the band has to agree on it.

In the old days, everyone had to argue until you settled on something. In the internet age, however, there is help online.

Aritstator is an app that will generate a name based on whatever genre of music you play. For example, I entered the genre “Canadian psych” and it returned the following:

  • Spindowsbox
  • La Promo
  • Carlo Bolson
  • Melodic Tell Orchestra
  • Henry Donks
  • rouersticír Legend
  • Garrett Lindberg
  • Marc KINI

Okay, not bad. But what if you tried something like, say, “Nuvavut shoegaze?” A first pass resulted in these suggestions:

  • musiX
  • Todos Tiburonos
  • Tetrarkod
  • Aviador Deviens
  • Cruz de Oliveira
  • Gabriela Hablabajal
  • Cirurgans
  • Horacio Bataz
  • Toca-aboy Peghugh
  • Haggard Crosby

Maybe, maybe not. But it’s sure a fun timesuck.
