Headline of the Day: “The Muppets Raped Kurt!”

Seen the Muppets movie yet?  If you have, you’ll know that Dr. Teeth and his crew cover “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”  This has annoyed the Widow Cobain to no end because, she says, she never gave her permission for the song to be used in the film.  She’s saying that the Muppets “raped” the memory of Kurt.

At issue is Courtney’s contention that she has absolute say over how Kurt’s music may be used.  That’s doubtful.

First, there were two other members of the band who also have a stake in the Nirvana catalogue, both of whom agreed to the use of the song.  Hell, Dave Grohl is even in the movie.  Second, Courtney long ago sold a big chunk of the rights to Kurt’s music to a company called Primary Wave Music.  According to a variety of sources, PWM also has the rights of the distribution of the Nirvana catalogue.

Let’s see if Courtney cashes any of the resulting royalty cheques.
