Hedley singer Jacob Hoggard sentenced to five years in jail

The long legal saga involving sexual assault allegations against Hedley singer Jacob Hoggard came to an end this morning (October 20) with a judge sentencing him to five years in jail.

Justice Gillian Roberts characterized Hoggard’s offense as a “manipulating and degrading” rape.

“I believe (the victim). I accept her evidence in its entirety,” he said.

The sentence comes after a trial that was delayed several times due to COVID. And when it finally began, it stretched out over four weeks and six days of jury deliberation.

Even the defense didn’t argue that hard, asking for a sentence of three or four years. The Crown asked for six to seven. The judge basically went right now the middle. There will be an appeal, of course. That could take months or even years.

A full report can be found in The Star. Beware: The details are pretty graphic.
