Here’s our weekly update on the Canadian sales battle between CDs and vinyl

Trends indicate that CDs will emerge as the sales champions in Canada for 2024–at least in raw numbers of units sold. Vinyl isn’t far behind. However, because vinyl costs more, vinyl will be the revenue champs for the year. And if the decline of CD sales continues, they will be eclipsed by vinyl sometime in 2025.

Here’s where things stand this week via Luminate:

  • Total CD sold in Canada last week: 30,027 (Down 2.2% from the week before)
  • Total vinyl records sold last week: 29,538 (Up 1.0%)
  • CDs sold in all of Canada so far this year: 1,235,803 (Down 12,9% from this point last year)
  • Vinyl sold in all of Canada so far this year: 1,088,462 (Up a whopping 29.9% from a year ago)

As for streaming:

  • On-demand audio streams in Canada last week: 2,780,624,975 (Down 0.8% from the previous week)
  • On-demand audio streams this year: 106,221,493,526 (Up by 10.4% from this point in 2023.)
