HMV Launches New Digital Store Featuring Some Cool Mobile Twists

Looking for an alternative to iTunes?  Try the brand new HMVDigital, a made-in-Canada storefront solution for people looking to buy MP3s.  It comes with a couple of cool app functions that involve using your mobile’s camera and microphone to track down artists and songs.  And the nice, clean interface makes browing easy.

From the press release:

The hmv digital Canada app will allow users to shop, look and listen by combining image and sound searches with mp3 downloads for the first time.

Canadians can browse the extensive digital catalogue featuring the hottest new releases and biggest hits in music, to pre order or buy individual tracks or complete albums. Their digital purchases are added to the user’s virtual locker ‘myhmv.’

The new app also features an innovative image search, which allows users to scan album covers with their Apple mobile device to access 30 second track previews. Android users can purchase mp3 downloads from their device, using this function. Image search provides an effective way for music lovers to sample each track on their own device, before they purchase it, with a simple scan of the album cover.

Sound Search lets users discover the tunes they hear around them every day, whether it’s the music playing in store at hmv or a track playing on the radio. One can use sound search to identify their favourite song, and purchase the download immediately.

After the inmyvault fiasco I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.

For anyone wondering, this new site moves your 7digital account back to HMV, so everything that had previously been purchased with HMV, then moved to 7digital, is now moved back to HMV.

Apparently the streaming didn't pan out. I liked it in my 2 week trial, but with 1000 cds, I couldn't justify $5/month for streaming on my pc when the cds are 3 feet behind me.

I really like seeing the 7digital purchases back in my locker. I had a few download issues with the Vault system.
