How did this Robbie Williams biopic get made? You’ll understand when you see the trailer

He’s never been much of a hit in North America, but Robbie Williams, ex of the British band Take That, is a gigantic superstar in many parts of the world. I know people who will drop everything and fly anywhere he’s staging a concert.

So, yes, Robbie is a superstar who is fodder for the biopic industry. And he’s getting one, although it’s probably a little different than you might expect. The film follows Robbie’s life (no surprise) but instead of casting an actor in a standard sort of lead role, they’re using a CGI-generated monkey.

You read that right. Robbie is portrayed for the entire film as a monkey. A chimp. Something out of Planet of the Apes.

Maybe I’d better just let you see the trailer.

Okay, so why a monkey? Something about the music industry turning artists into performing artists. Metaphor something something. Let’s ask Robbie.

The Greatest Showman opens Christmas Day.
