Survey

How do you stack up against this survey on band t-shirts?

Chances are if you’re reading this, you’ve bought a few band t-shirts in your life. But how many? And how much have you spent?

A new study from Custom Ink reveals the following:

  • The average music fan owns six artist t-shirts.
  • Heavy metal fans do better than that with an average of 10. No one beats them.
  • Metal fans spend the most on band shirts, spending an average of US$500 over their lifetime. (The average fan spend is US$400.)
  • Americans–and this was an American study–stay that you should be able to name at least three songs by an artist to own and wear one of their shirts. None of this Ramones t-shirt poseuring.
  • However, 30% say that you don’t need to know anything about the band to wear one of their shirts.
  • The most popular artist t-shirts in all of America? Ones involving Olivia Rodrigo.
  • When it comes to searches for metal shirts, Testament, Trivium, Opeth, and Like Moths to Flames are on top.

There’s more to learn here.

I have nine PWEI shirts alone lol. Over 30 not including those lost in the great moth wars of 2014 & 2015.

  • I stopped counting at 45, because I didn’t want to go through the laundry hamper to keep counting. I’m upwards of 50+ ranging from GWAR to Death Cab for Cutie to Nekromantix to Zeal & Ardor. Not counting all the retired ones I’ve put into storage. And with the exception of 2 (Legend of the Seagullmen and Dead Kennedys) they’ve all been purchased at shows. I may have a problem.

  • I think that I have between ten and fifteen shirts now, and a RUSH hoodie that I seldom wear to keep it in good shape. I have a tendency to wear a band shirt until it is threadbare and falling apart, so most of my shirts from the 80s and 90s are long gone (sadly). I have save a few special ones, but there isn’t a point in having one if you aren’t wearing it and showing off the bands that you enjoy!

  • My husband owns about 30 to 40 music t-shirts while I only own 3. I would buy a lot more music t-shirts if they came in something other than crewneck, i.e. scoop neck or vee-neck but I hate stuff around my neck and besides that, I don’t think the classic crew neck t-shirt is very flattering to women who aren’t small and petite. I think the fit looks boxy and that’s definitely not a look I want.

I never counted but if it looks cool, why not buy it?
