How Many Music Artists Can YOU Name Off the Top of Your Head?

Let’s understand something first.  If you’re reading this, then there’s a much better-than-average chance that you’re a more-engaged-than-average music fan.  There may be millions of us heavy-duty music fans, but there are billions of casual music fans.

Want proof?  Just look at the ratings for this year’s Grammy Awards.  Second-most-watched Grammy telecast in history.  The people who like this crap far, far outnumber us.

Which brings me to this article from Digital Music News.  Quoting Ty Roberts, the CTO of Gracenote, one of the largest digital music data companies in the universe, the average people can name 10 to 20 artists off the top of their heads.  That’s it.

But with so much music available to easily to virtually everybody at a price approaching (or at) free, how is this possible?  How can the masses have less engagement with music today than they did a decade or so ago.

We’ve grown shallower with our engagement.  And it’s not necessarily the fault of the music.  It’s because we’re inundated with so much stuff that the time the masses spend with music is less meaningful than it used to be.

Read the whole article.  It’ll give you a different perspective on things.
