The Fuzz Face (which I'm guessing this is, from the components used) is a wonderfully simple effect, but getting one to sound good involves quite a bit more than this – with so few components, getting the gains just right on the transistors, the capacitors used, etc, all play a huge role in the final sound; much more so that a more complex fuzz like a Big Muff, which cascades a lot of gain stages together to mask any deficiencies in tone from the components.
Fuzz is like fine wine – many, many subtle factors combine to create a multitude of tones and behaviours. Fuzz aficionados obsess about the details (and we like it that way).
There's a great documentary on the fuzz pedal, with lots of interviews from musicians and designers, here: http://www.fuzzthemovie.com
