How to Manage Your Music Library

Maintaining a music library will always have its challenges.  Libraries of physical stuff–CDs, vinyl, tapes–can take up a lot of space and require certan climatic conditions for proper preservation.

Digital libaries tend to take almost no room at all, but they come with their own problems:  the need to back-up multiple times, hard drive crashes, power spikes that fry networks and the possible expense of setting up something to deliver the music to wherever you are.

Intelligent Life magazine looks at both scenarios.  What methods are best? What’s the most practical?  The most cost-effective?

It’s a long article, but if you have any kind of substantial music library that require care and feeding, it’s worth the read.

  • " As it is, they remain the cheap paperback to vinyl’s handsome hardback. And the e-book is at the gates."

I agree with this. Even as a reflection of my own collection of stuff, I purchase hardcover editions of paperbacks in the same way I buy vinyl versions of CDs.

  • Good article, but didn't really help in the end, did it? Just some good points about all formats. The lesson seems to be: Keep everything.
