Music History

I’d forgotten that Pele was also a musician of renown

There was a time when Pele was the most famous athlete in the universe. Legend says that Pele was once the target of a carjacking in Brazil but when the thugs recognized him, they let him (and the car) go. When Ronaldo was held up the same way, he was recognized but the thieves took the car, anyway.

Pele died yesterday (December 29) after fighting colon cancer. While the world remembers his exploits as a footballer, others are looking back on his musical career.

He even entertained Maradona once.

His first foray into music came in 1977 when he contributed material to a documentary on his life and career. That was followed by an album entitled Pelé Ginga in 2006, and a 2016 single for the Rio Olympic Games entitled “Esperança.” And let’s not forget “Acredita No Véio (Listen To The Old Man)”) with Rodrigo y Gabriela.

Put these on your playlist.
