Is another music industry #MeToo situation upon us? Some cautious advice.
If you’re online today looking for music news, chances are you might run across a story concerning Maynard James Keenan of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. It’s a disturbing story, too.
Reporting on a situation like this is very difficult. At the moment, all we have is a series of anonymous Twitter posts with no proof to back up the allegations and a summary on a sub-reddit. The charges are serious–felonious, in fact.
As we’ve seen over the last couple of years, accusations like this can destroy a person, even in the absence of solid proof and legally-acceptable evidence. Some allegations were enough to sink Hedley earlier this year.
At the same time, if a crime was committed, justice needs to be served.
This has already become a news story. It’s bound to spread at the speed of light.
Let’s see how this unfolds before any judgment is passed. Caution is the word.
I know he’s an icon to many, but if there’s any validity to this story his career deserves to be over.
I heard stories about Maynard many years ago, about his really screwed-up childhood. I’m not surprised that he might behave this way, but then there is no real proof. I’ve heard stories about a lot of famous artists who like underage girls, over the years, and I believe them. Some of the names would be very surprising. I believe the people who told me, because they played in bands with these singers, and were on the road with them. It’s something that is kept quiet and was never talked about, until now.
