One way to stay motivated during any kind of workout is to choose the right music. But what music is best? Not everyone responds well to playlists like Beast Mode.

Some British researchers analyzed more than 2,000 workout playlists on Spotify (~450,000 song) to determined what tracks carry the greatest motivational value when it comes to working out. Things like danceability, loudness, tempo, and energy were taken into account and then applied to how these tracks would have on heart rates. The faster the heartbeat, the more blood reaches the muscles, and the easier it is to keep up whatever pace you’re aiming for.

Cardio: “I’m Good (Blue)” by David Guetta and Bebe Rexha. Have this one on and your estimated heart rate will be at around128 BPM.

Weightlifting: “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers. You need a heart rate of between 130 and 150 BPM to maintaining energy and this song should get most people to 148 BPM.

HIIT (High intensity interval training): You need to get up as high as 180 BPM depending on your age. Best songs are Harry Styles’ “As It Was” and Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer.” Both elicit heart rates of around 170 BPM.

Cool down: “Money Trees” from Kendrick Lamar. It encourages bringing heart rates down to about 72 BPM.
