Is rock dead? Not if you look at the data.

Fred Jacobs is a radio and music tech consultant who loves to dive into data about music trends and consumption. One of his latest pieces (via Hypebot) gets pretty nerdy when it comes to the health of rock. Is rock dead? Nope.

Although I urge you to read the whole thing, I do want to draw your attention to these highlights.

  1. Searches for rock music are up 600% on Spotify.
  2. One in five Americans say that classic rock is their favourite genre. (Scroll down for a nice graphic.)
  3. A stunning number of rock songs have streamed 100 million times or more with many hitting over a billion. Here’s a playlist that might help.
  4. U2, Coldplay, and the Eagles are in the Top 10 highest-grossing tours of the last quarter. Fall Out Boy, Blink-182, and Tool are in the Top 50.
