Is This the Tracklisting for the New U2 Album? And Will This Be the First Single?

That’s what certain dark corners of the Internet allege. And will the record be called Manhattan? Thanks to Dan for the tip.

Keep in mind that this could all be bullshit.  Or not. Can anyone confirm/deny/refute/annotate/explain?

  • I would be surprised if North Star and Every Breaking Wave are on the new album as they're 'old news' by now. I could be wrong though. Stranger things have happened.

  • The only thing I can agree on is a September single release. If you're a band like U2 and want to stay "relevant" like Bono has mentioned on numerous occasions when talked about the new album. You're gonna want to have a song out just before Grammy deadline which is usually the end of September. I'm thinking this album is gonna be pretty commercial. The two biggest singles of U2 in the last 13 years have been "Beautiful Day" first week of September 2000 and "Vertigo" September 23 2004. I remember that day because the single dropped a day early on 102.1 The Edge. And as Daniel Lanois mentioned, he heard the album and there were some songs that he worked with and was familiar with. I'm assuming North Star and Every Breaking Wave. As for the rest of the track list. This is a band who came up with a track called "Stand Up Comedy" on their last album! Anything is possible!

  • Im having a bad feeling about this new album…. if this information is true, the titles itself doesnt sound good… what Im trying to say is that this album won't be a ballad album like The Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby…. but needless to say that EVERY BREAKING WAVE is gonna be the best song/ballad in this album…. the rest of the songs sounds somewhat modernized or less likely to be meaningful… I dont know it my take though…. Im expecting another achtung baby… not a club or modernized music album…. U2 should keep their uniqueness going on….. U2's song were always emotional yeah…. I pray that this track list is fake :/

It is important to note that Stand Up, Comedy could be meant in several ways. Like standing up for something is not a joke

I love that song!!! I'm just saying the titles fit in. Should of said that! It sounds like them to an extent! Especially "Skyline" I'm thinking "Windows In The Skies". That's all!!!

  • Regarding Kevin's June 28 comment: "I was a fan since 1981, but U2's last three albums are DULL and the songwriting is embarrassing."

ATYCLB, and HTDAAB dull and embarrassing, really? Both albums won grammy song of the year awards for Beautiful Day, and Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own among many other Grammy awards.

Its OK, and I get that you haven't been a fan since POP, but calling everything U2 has done since, "dull and the song writing embarrassing" sounds odd coming from such a long time fan.

  • If true, this album title could hint at this being their final album, with the first being BOY and the second being MANhattan. It's the kind of play-on-words they seem to like. U2 have historically embraced the romanticized idea of their journey from Ireland to America. With Manhattan being the point of arrival for so many Irish immigrants over the years, this could prove to be their final landing place.

  • I'd rather have an lp with mediocre titles and killer songs than one with killer titles and mediocre songs. This could be a U2 sponsored false leak in response to actual leaks over last few albums. U2 does have a sense of humor. Interesting we're debating titles and don't have any substantial evidence of actual songs. This seems to be a well-protected album with a select few actually hearing it. Manhattan could very well be a red herring.

    • If you look up U2 & CHRIS MARTIN – EARTH 2030 it’s suppose to be on the new Manhatten Album. Listen to it.
I love that damn song! Bono”s vocals are
      OUTSTANDING! Bono sings the 2nd
      verse and holds some notes.
Definite potential to be a single.

I'm from Dublin and have connections with U2 through Bono's pal Guggi. Guggi and I went to the same school called Plunketts in Dublin. I have met and know Bono thanks to my friendship with him. Okay , Guggi has been told not to reveal too much but I managed to get some info from him. The good news is that the album is going to be released in late November in time for the Christmas market. They will release the first single two weeks prior and they are expecting it to be huge -.as big as With Or Without You. U2 have pulled out all the stops and have learned their lesson after releasing a weak first single from NLOTH. Danger Mouse has given them a fresh, funkier sound. It is very commercial but brilliant and relevant at the same time. This album I'm tols is going to rival classics like Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree. I have posted here because of the relative obscurity of the site and the fact that I won't geyt into trouble!.

  • I so wish they would release the song Glastonbury. They played it Milan and the cover band Xiren recorded it. The Xiren version is probably one of the best U2 songs ever. I heard a rumor U2 changed it up though. I hope not because it was so perfect. PLEEEASE release it. I wish they would just release multiple albums at once as they seem to have enough material.

From my conversation with Guggi (and apologies for omitting this) they will be be releasing 12 brand new songs. There will be no Glastonbury, Every Breaking Wave or North Star. Some of those may become B sides, but as far as U2 are concerned – those songs are not good enough for the new album.

The new album according to Guggi is out of this world. Expect late November release with the single coming two weeks before.

The last interview of Bono on irish radio says 2014 COULD be the release; so latest news report, that they´re recording again in the studio. Your information seems more to be rumour and fake – or Guggi told you old stuff or your conversation with him was some month ago.

My conversation with Guggi was only last month and yes Tim I am prepared to put my money where my mouth is. U2's new album will be released at the end of November of this year. They are puling out all the stops on this one and have invested in a huge marketing campaign in time for the Christmas market. Adam Clayton got married just two weeks ago so that it would not conflict with the publicity work. He will be back from honeymoon next week. Trust me, this is no word of a lie. Their new single is going to be called "Smash and Grab"

They say Larry told them that U2 are going back to NY next week to finish the album.
Larry also said that the album will be released in February with an arena tour starting in May.

    Guggi vs Larry….

  • @Morn
There is absolutely no way that they are releasing the album in Feb 2014. All I can say on that one is its 100% fake. Guggi told me that it would not be out in 2014 as U2 do not want to go 5 years since their last album and that NLOTH was released at the same time in 2009. Initial sales were good, then it slowed before picking up again. That album wasn't a patch on the sales of ATYCLB and HTDAAB which were both released in Sept and November respectively. Now you can believe that fiction on the forum or someone who is a personal friend of a friend of Bono's. I am born and bread in Glasnevin and grew up with Guggi, went to the same school and we both have an interest in art.

@mc – that was never a rumor in 2009, the album could be called "Sonic Boom" but Guggi told me that they change titles all the time. NLOTH was given that title at the very last minute after Bono flew back from France just before the albums release in 2009. He got the inspiration when landing in Dublin airport.

I don't believe this…Bono was talking to the Edge for a long time about this phenomena that happens in Ireland, on the sea or on a lake, when the sky and the water's surface almost meet and you have the sensation there is No Line On The Horizon, uncertainty at its climax…The song with the same title was in progress and all the band rumors at the time hinted towards that title..

So there remains the rumour of releasing the album in Feb 2014 and the tour indoors May 2014, according a german fan who met Larry two days ago. And I trust him…But even when Larry likes in these days to release the album in Feb 2104, it could be delayed….album seems to be still in progress

  • This hardcore fan was hoping it was true. I hate the delay and delays and delays. I think they think they have to go on a massive tour for every album so they wait until they're ready for that. I wouldn't mind them putting out several albums before each tour if we could get more music sooner.

Nobody with the access to the band that you claim to have would jeopardize that friendship to leak this information, especially when it doesn't reward you in any way.

Again, care to take me up on the thousand dollar bet? Didn't think so…

    Reply
  • @Tim

I don't have access to the band, I have only met Bono a few times in my life and my friendship with Guggi is entirely separate. Do you really believe an album release leak would sabotage a life long friendship?

Besides I don't see any mention of my exclusive anywhere else on the Internet or the mass media. This is an obscure blog and its safe to divulge such information. If you had read my earlier posts you would know that I agreed upon your 1000 dollar wager. This information is for the fans whose patience will be rewarded. U2 want to make sure that the album is pitch perfect. It is going to be an absolute gem.

    Reply
  • I am a brazilian fan of the band and I read all the posts of this comment box. I believe the band did not want to put their fans waiting five years for new sounds. I really want to numb myself with new material before the end of the year. It would be a great end of year, is not it? And when I read things like "It is going to be an absolute gem" and "According to Guggi is out of this world," it seems grand enough to make my day better. But this is a personal feeling, nothing special or unique information. When I write these words I can only remember the wonderful sound I heard in Sao Paulo when they played Zooropa. I want that feeling and that environment back. 🙂

    Reply
  • Northside Bootboy I believe your words. Actually they make sense. Why releasing an album in February (like they did with NLOTH) and screwing it after the Christmas market rather than publishing it just before Christmas assuring higher selling rates? I don't mind if you are the friend of a friend of a friend of the waitress in some deep Ireland pub or trully a Guggi's friend. It just make sense.

Anyway, in around a month we should know the first Single if you are right…

I don't think is such a long time to wait and see if Northside was right or not, before calling the BS, don't you think guys?

PS: I'm part of that "idiot" 1%

  • The reason I'm not buying what Northside is saying has nothing to do with the speculated release date. I indeed still think 2013 is somewhat plausible.

The reason I'm not buying what Northside is saying is because of his so-called inside information. Even if Guggi knows all these details (single title, release month, etc.) why is he blabbing? Surely the band wants things as quiet as possible until they're ready. Why would Guggi- one of the bands closest confidants- upset the band by blabbing details to some random guy he halfway knows? Plus, we know that U2 are in the studio wrapping things up as we speak. If U2 aren't done with the album, how the heck would Guggi know all this stuff? Finally, Northside acts as if he's being secretive by posting here… He knows what the internet is, right? His posts have already been picked up by numerous other U2 sites. So either Guggi is betraying U2's trust (and doesn't have the best wishes of the band at heart) or Northside is betraying Guggi's trust (and doesn't have the best wishes of the band at heart). Or the whole thing is BS. I'm going with BS.

  • I'm appalled by the trolling and deliberated disinformation surrounding the release of U2's latest album. However, I did think Northside Bootboy had some sort of clairvoyant ability as he has eerily predicted the release of U2's new album which will be out in early December not November but it will be will be preceded by a single a few weeks before. The other big news is that U2 are releasing another album in 2014 and they will tour in 2015 around March.

  • @ thefloozy, this would be perfect! Magistral! May God hear you and the band! Since we know of many lines of work and ideas that the band has developed, it would be amazing to experience different textures of sound in such a short time. They deserve something big and wide; proportional to them and their fans. And, "I'm ready for what's next," with my fingers crossed!

  • Tim,

This was the information I received – U2 are indeed releasing new material at the end of November with a limited vinyl release of Ordinary Love. That's pretty good inside info in my book. The album doesn't look set to be released this Christmas but that is because they weren't 100% happy with the record. The Edge came up with some new sounds and the band decided to replace a couple of songs on the album in NY. They had the the date set…everything, but a last minute creative flourish from Edge was too good to ignore. For what its worth, April 2014 is the date that their new album is expected to be released. Yes, I apologise because I am as frustrated as everyone else here with the long wait, but I know that you and every U2 fan on the planet will know will be well worth it.

  • Well folks was talking to Guggi this week and though U2’s album was meant for November 2013 release – it was shelved due to last minute with unseen projects like Mandele’s soundtrack which took longer than anticipated, and then U2 being the perfectionists wanted to make late adjustments to the record.

I can tell you that the new album will be called ‘Sirens’ and will be released Nov 2014 with a single being released sometime in September. The album was completed months ago but U2 decided to forgo a summer release so instead will release it in November. According to Lanois the album is brilliant, different from their last records but still distinctively U2.

Expect this one to be a smash!
