It’s begun: Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” is back for 2023
There are still three months and twenty days until Christmas. Heat waves are gripping large swaths of North America. Kids have only been in school for a few days. But for some, Christmas is already here.
Over the weekend, I needed some lawn supplies and headed to my local Canadian Tire. There was no one to help me in the garden centre because all employees were busy setting up Christmas displays. Look, the introduction of pumpkin spice latte two weeks early was a bit much, but pushing Christmas decorations already is nuts.
The music and radio industry is also complicit. Last week, the secure digital delivery services I use to receive new music (DMDS and PlayMPE) pushed a couple of Christmas songs. It was still August. In a post about that, I said it was only a matter of hours before Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” was back on the radio. I was being slightly facetious, but as it turns out, I was band on.
According to stats from Spotify, that cursed song is already spiking when it comes to on-demand streams and is, in fact, back on some Spotify charts. Last Friday, the first day of September, the song was streamed 316,000 times. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, it was streamed 112,040 times.
Even Mariah feels this is too much–sort of.
