John Lennon’s Grammy is Going to be Reposessed
Here’s the thing: when you win a major award like a Grammy or an Oscar, you have to sign a document that says you will never, ever sell the trophy under any circumstances. If you do, legal forces will rain down upon you with righteous and furious anger and launch proceedings to have the statuette taken away.
Such is the case with a John Lennon Grammy Award that somehow came into the possession of Gotta Have It! Collectibles in NYC. It’s a rare find: the Grammy Lennon and McCartney shared for writing “Michelle” back in 1966, one of the ultra-few Grammys given to the Beatles. What’s it going for? The opening bid is $40,000 USD, which seems to be a fairly reasonable price for such an item. Pocket change to a one percenter.
The Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences–the people who award the Grammys–are good and truly pissed off and have launched legal action against the owner who’s trying to sell it, accusing him of “fraud, false advertising, unfair competition and tortious interference with contractual relations.”
Weirdly, this same award was sold by Christie’s in 2004 for $35,850, but the Academy didn’t seem troubled by that.
