John Oliver praises Nickelback for being brave because they stood up to Donald Trump

In case you missed it last week, Donald Trump tweeted out a Nickelback meme involving the song “Photograph” to make his point about his demands that Joe Biden and his son Hunter be investigated for corruption.

The tweet didn’t live long as a copyright complaint by Warner forced its removal. (An explanation of the takedown can be found here.) But when it was posted on October 2, Nickelback saw a surge in streams and sales for the song.

  • 772,000 on-demand streams (up 38% from the week before)
  • Digital download sales up 569%

Meanwhile, the story was picked up by John Oliver on Last Week Tonight. He called the Alberta boys “brave” for sticking up to Trump.

Meanwhile, Canadians have come to Nickelback’s rescue with supportive messages on Twitter such as “Hasn’t Nickelback suffered enough?” and “Just like that, Trump made Nickelback cool.”
